Sustainability

London Taxis have always been built with sustainability in mind.

Their purpose-built design and robust construction means that they last far longer than conventional cars. In fact, it's not uncommon for London Taxis to clock up more than 500,000 miles in a lifetime of use.

That's all the way to the moon and back!

Did you know..?

  • Since 1994 we have reduced the Diesel Particulates emissions from our vehicle by more than 99% and NOx by more than 80%
  • Tail-pipe emissions produced by TX4 (Euro 5) Automatic are on average 47% cleaner than current required legal limits
  • Tail-pipe emissions produced by TX4 (Euro 5) Manual are on average 67% cleaner than current required legal limits

The latest TX4 meets the current required Euro 5 emissions standards. It is our cleanest, greenest and most efficient London Taxi to date.

TX4 also comfortably meets the EU targets for the reduction of hazardous substances during manufacture and recyclability. To ensure that we do this in an environmentally friendly way, The London Taxi Company has partnered with Autogreen Ltd.

Autogreen, in its role as the service provider for The London Taxi Company end of life taxis, will provide a contracted network of 'take-back' and Authorised Treatment Facilities throughout the United Kingdom. This process ensures that re-use, recovery and recycling targets are met. Autogreen will take back, free of charge, qualifying end of life vehicles that are presented by the last owner or keeper.

We are currently developing TX4 (Euro 6) which will meet the required Euro Emissons regulations for passenger vehicles. And we are already working on the future London Taxi; a no compromise, purpose built, zero-emissions capable Black Cab, due for launch in 2017.

And we work with the HyTEC Consortium, testing and developing five prototype hydrogen fuel cell powered London Taxis. These vehicles, which were used as part of an elite VIP fleet during the London Olympics 2012, emit zero emissions from tailpipe. In fact, the only by-product of the fuel cell is water vapour.

Find out more about this exciting project by visiting the HyTEC consortium website or watch the vehicles in action on our YouTube channel.

We're working hard to future-proof public transport.
